    Drywall Restoration

Repairing and replacing water-damaged drywall. We safely remove compromised materials, dry the underlying structure, and provide seamless reconstruction finishes.

The Impact of Water on Drywall

Drywall (also known as gypsum board or sheetrock) is highly susceptible to water damage. The core is made of porous gypsum plaster, and it is faced with heavy paper. When exposed to water from a flood, leak, or burst pipe, drywall acts like a wick, drawing moisture upward and outward rapidly.

Once saturated, drywall loses its structural integrity. It becomes soft, swells, bubbles, and crumbles. More importantly, the paper backing provides a perfect food source for mold. In the humid environment of South Florida, wet drywall can begin supporting mold growth in as little as 24 to 48 hours.

    To Dry or to Replace?

One of the most common questions property owners ask is whether wet drywall can be saved. The answer depends on several critical factors:

    • Water Category: If the drywall was exposed to Category 3 (black water/sewage) or Category 2 (gray water), it must be removed and discarded due to severe health hazards. Only drywall exposed to clean water (Category 1) is a candidate for drying.
    • Duration of Exposure: If the drywall has been wet for more than 48 hours, the risk of hidden mold growth inside the wall cavity is high, usually necessitating removal.
    • Insulation: If the wall cavity contains fiberglass or cellulose insulation, the insulation will trap moisture against the drywall. In these cases, the lower portion of the drywall must be removed to extract the wet insulation.
    • Structural Integrity: If the drywall is sagging, heavily bubbling, or crumbling, it has lost its integrity and must be replaced.

    The "Flood Cut" Process

When drywall is deemed unsalvageable, our mitigation technicians perform what is known in the industry as a "flood cut."

A flood cut involves cutting away the damaged drywall in a clean, straight line, typically 12 to 24 inches above the highest point of moisture migration. This process serves several vital purposes:

    1. It removes the compromised, unsalvageable material.
    2. It allows access to remove wet insulation from the wall cavity.
    3. It exposes the wooden studs and sill plates, allowing our air movers and dehumidifiers to dry the structural framing of the building directly.
    4. It allows us to inspect the inner wall cavity for hidden mold growth and apply antimicrobial treatments to the framing.

    Seamless Drywall Reconstruction

911 Mitigation Inc. is a full-service restoration company. We don't just tear out the damage and leave you with exposed studs; we manage the entire reconstruction process to return your property to its pre-loss condition.

Once the structural framing has been certified dry and sanitized, our reconstruction team takes over:

    • Installation: We install new insulation and hang new drywall, ensuring a tight, secure fit.
    • Taping and Mudding: Our skilled finishers apply tape and joint compound, carefully floating the seams to blend the new drywall perfectly with the existing wall.
    • Texture Matching: South Florida homes feature a variety of wall textures (knockdown, orange peel, smooth). Our experts meticulously match the new texture to the old, making the repair invisible.
    • Priming and Painting: Finally, we prime the new drywall and paint the repaired area, restoring the aesthetic beauty of your space.

    Insurance Documentation for Drywall Repairs

Removing drywall increases the scope and cost of a restoration project, which means insurance adjusters require solid justification. Our technicians thoroughly document the necessity of drywall removal. We provide photographic evidence of the damage, moisture meter readings proving saturation levels, and documentation of the water category.

We coordinate the entire mitigation and reconstruction scope with your insurance carrier, ensuring that the necessary drywall replacement and finishing are properly represented in your claim.
